Time For Change

Plastic bags have been around for 50 years now. It is estimated world-wide that 1 trillion conventional bags are manufactured and used every year. Until the introduction of renewable source biodegradable / compostable and Biohybrid™ plastics, plastics were only made from non-renewable sources such as petrochemical products derived from crude oil, the same oil that is used to make petrol for cars.

 

Crude oil is considered a finite resource, with international study reports stating that we are now facing what is called “peak oil” supply. “Peak oil” means that we are using more crude oil than available and it is becoming a constrained and expensive resource. In addition, plastic waste is littering our water ways,oceansand landfills, with plastics that can take hundreds of years to break down in the environment; we have a short and long term problem.

 

Bioplastics

Bioplastics encompasses a whole family of materials which differ from conventional plastics insofar as that they are biobased, biodegradable, or both.

 

Biobased means plastics derived from renewable biomass sources, such as plant based starch, sugarcane or cellulose.Conventional plastics are derived from non-renewable fossil fuels such as petroleum.

 

Bioplastics are already used in the fields of packaging, agriculture, gastronomy, consumer electronics and automotive to name a few.

In these market segments, bioplastic materials are used to manufacture products intended for short term use, such as mulch films or catering products, as well as durable applications, such as mobile phone covers or interior components for cars. Some common applications of bioplastics are packaging materials, dining utensils, food packaging, and insulation.

 

Compostable Biodegradable Plastics

Compostable biodegradable plastic products and bags are often made from products like starch, which in composting will break down into elements like carbon dioxide, water and compost. Biodegradable bags are generally best suited to composting. To meet international standards, bags need to disintegrate within 12 weeks, contain no heavy metals and fully biodegrade within 6 months.

 

Compostable plastics are not only an environmentally beneficial choice, products made from Cardia Compostable resins are food safe, offering consumers a healthy choice.

 

Biohybrid™ Plastics

Cardia Biohybrid™ plastics use less crude oil, as they are a blend of GMO free renewable plant based materials and traditional polyolefins. Unique to Cardia, Biohybrid™ plastics are contain GMO free, renewable, plant based thermoplastics starch, are heavy metal free and reduce global warming by sequestering CO2.  Biohybrid plastics have a lower carbon foot print, verified by independent Life Cycle Assessment.

 

Typical product applications include flexible films and bags for food, hygiene and general packaging applications,waste management products, injection moulded items, blow moulded containers, thermoformed trays and foam products.

 

Plastics containing patented Cardia Biohybrid™ resins can be recycled in the normal plastic waste stream.
